I have a first gen mini that still works perfect and the battery lasts as long as I need. The most common problem with these is that the battery fails. You can get replacements online for $12. My wife's 3rd generation iPod 40GB battery failed last year and she wanted a nano for size and battery performance reasons. I just bought her one for our anniversary. The color screen is well worth it and the battery does last longer. It will last a long time, but if you want the color display or album art it might be worth the upgrade.
